LOUISVILLE, KY (September 1, 2016) – Charah®, Inc., a total solutions company providing unparalleled service and innovation for the coal-fired power generation industry, has received a total of eight prestigious awards from the North Carolina Department of Labor (NCDOL) for an outstanding record of employee safety. This is the fifth consecutive year that Charah has been recognized by NCDOL for its safety record.

In June 2016, Charah was recognized for its safety record for its ash processing, landfill operations and landfill management project at Duke Energy’s Marshall Steam Station in Catawba County, North Carolina for the fourth consecutive year and for similar operations at Duke Energy’s Belews Creek Steam Station in Stokes County, North Carolina for the second consecutive year and at Duke Energy’s Allen Steam Station in Gaston County, North Carolina for the third consecutive year.

Additional awards were given to Charah’s pond operations at Duke Energy’s Asheville Plant in Skyland, North Carolina for the third consecutive year and to Duke Energy’s Riverbend Steam Station in Gaston County, North Carolina for the first time. All sites received a Gold-level Certificate of Safety Achievement, the state’s highest safety award, in recognition of Charah’s outstanding safety and health efforts and the promotion of safe working conditions in 2015.

In April 2016, two other Charah landfill construction, operations and management projects, located at Duke Energy’s Cliffside Steam Station in Shelby, North Carolina and at Duke Energy’s Roxboro Steam Plant in Roxboro, North Carolina also received a Gold-level Certificate of Safety Achievement for outstanding safety and health efforts and the promotion of safe working conditions in 2015. In addition, Charah’s structural fill project at Brickhaven Mine in Chatham County, North Carolina was recognized. This is the fifth consecutive year that Charah’s Roxboro operations have achieved this milestone, the third consecutive year for Cliffside and the first year for Brickhaven.

This annual awards program, run by the NCDOL, recognizes private and public companies that achieve and maintain good safety. Each year the state awards more than 3,000 certificates to companies around the state. In order to qualify for the Gold award, each company must have had no fatalities during the calendar year at the site or location for which the award was given and also must have maintained an incidence rate at least 50% below the average for its particular industry group. Awards were presented by North Carolina Commissioner of Labor Cherie Berry.

“We are honored to continue to receive these awards from the North Carolina Department of Labor year after year in recognition of our commitment to safety,” said Charles Price, President and CEO of Charah. “Safety is our foremost priority and we are always exploring new ways to improve our worksites and our employees’ attention to safety.
